Julie Flannery
Julie will be located in Venue 9 - Cluden
Working in both textiles and paint, Julie is inspired by the colours, moods and textures of the Scottish landscape.
As an artist, Julie strives to create dynamic compositions through the means of colour, contrast, texture and energy. Being emotionally connected to her work is very important and the Scottish scenery provides an endless source of inspiration. While enjoying a wide range of mediums, Julie tends to focus on fabrics and painting.
When creating her fabric collages, Julie works from sketches, paintings and photos. She uses a variety of fabrics to build up the scene before adding detail with machine embroidery which, like her drawing style, tends to be loose and expressive rather than precise. Julie’s love of textile art began with patchwork, a method that she finds both comforting and rewarding as she develops the craft with her own unique designs. As a lover of colour, Julie really enjoys selecting colours and patterns that work together. She also likes the idea of using scraps and off-cuts. Not only is this less wasteful, it also allows the incorporation of fabrics that hold special meaning or memories.
Julie paints because she finds it a lovely thing to do - either out in the landscape or in her summer house enjoying the garden. Her mark making has a relaxed approach and she has been using both acrylics and oils over the year.
Julie’s creativity consumes her in a very positive way and she is driven to produce things that are both beautiful and evocative. Her ideas are constantly evolving and she enjoys the full range of projects from one-off commissions, to small gifts and greetings cards for that important personal touch.
